Why did some groups tend to vote Democrat in the late 19th century?
Republicans supported workers over businesses
and provided land in the South and North for
newly freed slaves from the South.
Republicans tended to support big business,
Protetant elites. They also wanted restrictions on
alcohol, and tended to be anti-immigrant.
