Read the excerpt from our play and answer the following question. Narrator 1: As the train moves along the conductor makes his way through all the
cars. Starting at the front, he checks the passengers' tickets. As he enters the final
car, Frederick's hear pounds. He tries to keep his breath steady.
Frederick: (to himself) I've got to look calm - like I've done this a thousand times.

Why does the author use the stage direction "(to himself)"?

To show that Frederick is talking to someone called "himself."

To let us know that Frederick is talking to the narrators.
