The Southerners struggled quite a bit, considering how heavily they relied on the work of slaves. The Southern economy was extremely reliant on farming, so with a loss of slaves came a loss of crops and money. Farmers with large farms and many slaves struggled because all of that work went into their hands. They lost money and workers. Since the economy was so bad after they lost, it was necessary for them to create new inventions that would help them farm. With the help of machines and tools, the farms became much more manageable. Along with this, farmers needed to learn faster techniques for farming. With efficient techniques, machines, and tools, the Southern economy started to rebuild itself. Farmers once reliant on other people learned to hire workers and become more independent, which helped the economy.
