One of the largest changes in American society during this time was the birth of the factory. During this time, Americans tended to see opportunity in owning their land and being their own boss. However, for many people, it was not realistic to move west. The factory provided an opportunity for steady work, even if it was difficult. However, workers were now paid by the hour, having to follow the clock. They no longer had freedom to work at their own pace. Factories dramatically increased the amount of clothing produced – sometimes, by 50x what it was before the factory. But rather than lowering than demand for work, the factories required more workers as more consumers wanted to buy their products.
