How were kings able to gain power throughout the Middle Ages? 1. After winning a Crusade, they would return home with great wealth and then conquer their enemies.
2. With the support of the Church they could convince more people to follow them.
3. The Mongols wrecked up so many empires that it was much easier for kings to grow in power afterwards.
4. Because of increased economic prosperity, kings could afford powerful new armies.
