How was life in a democratic nation different from life under Mussolini’s rule?

It depends, some of my relatives who are now deceased had to live in fascist Italy, one or 2 others are still alive.

For schoolchildren, you had to wear a specific uniform, and there were specific classes indoctrinating you with information, and other propaganda. There would also be times, where the children would have to recite fascist songs, and march while listening to Mussolini’s speeches.

My family in Italy was mostly poor(ish) farmers in Northern Italy, and the taxes there in the local town were too high (in the 1930s.) So what did my great-grandmother decide to do? Send a letter to Mussolini complaining about it. How does he respond? Sends a letter back and lowers her taxes. True story.

Based on a party of fascist ideology, national socialism, those who provide a significant service to the state are rewarded, Mussolini encouraged women to have many kids, and I believe if you had a certain amount of children, Mussolini would personally award you with a metal.

About six years ago, I got to meet an Italian veteran who moved to my country after the war. I actually had talked many times with him, since he was a very lucid and kind person despite his old age, but it was then, and only by passing, that I discovered that he fought in the war.

He said that out of his 7 friends:

6 were conscripted, only one wasn't because his father had some sort of government job. One of his friends had a “debilitating disease” and he was still called.

Out of those 6, 2 died of dysentery, one lost a leg, another one had horrible burns after his ship was bombed and the remaining 2 (and himself) spent the majority of the war in a British prisoner's camp.

depends on the age of the teen, many believe by the age of 16 a person should know the strong difference between right and wrong along with the difference between risky and immediate death. swimming with sharks might be dangerous but swimming with sharks while bloody meat is attached to you is just insane. even more if you have no idea what you're doing. however, no matter the age, as long as the person is skilled enough and has the mental and physical capacity to control their actions doing whatever sport they put their mind to is all that matters.
