This idea was developed by Scientist Alfred Wegener during the early period of 20th century. This theory explains that what was the phenomenon of continents shifting their positions on the surface of the earth and this theory further also explained that why there are similar fossils as well as similar rock formations and animals found in different continents though they are virtually very far from each other and that is because when all these continents were combined, all these places had almost similar kind of environment and animals used to roam around in these continents before this continental drift took place and these continents went apart.  

The theory of Alfred Wegener was never accepted by other scientists and his theory never gained any acceptance during his lifetime, But eventually everyone believed on his theory after many years but during that time, he was not alive to see acceptance of his theory.
