Why would citizens in colonies prefer indirect rule over direct rule

Citizens within colonies would possibly prefer indirect rule over direct rule because this gave the indigenous people more power to govern themselves rather than being ruled from a far. This would allow the government to potentially make policies that were more in line with the needs of the people rather than just the colonial authorities.
