Jan van Eyck (ca. 1395-ca. 1441) was a Netherlandish painter who is particularly well-known for developing the new technique of oil painting. He painted both religious and secular subjects. He worked as a painter in the court of John III the Pitiless, and then to Phillip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. He moved to Bruges in 1429 where he lived until his death.

Although painters throughout history have admired his style, he has been found difficult to imitate. He is referred to in the Treaty of Versailles, in connection to the Ghent Altarpiece that Germany had taken from Belgium.
