The missouri compromise ended the slave trade, but how was the balance of power maintained?

In the Missouri, compromise balance was maintained with the 36 degrees 30 minutes latitude. Which in effect proposed that Maine would enter as a free state, Missouri would come in with slaves, but no slavery would be permitted in other states developed out of the Louisiana Purchase north of 36 degrees 30 minutes latitude, Missouri’s southern boundary
