The apollo 11 command module (right) and a drawing of the fictional space ship described by jules verne. the command module that carried the three apollo 11 astronauts was called columbia. it was named after the huge columbiad--or cannon--used to launch a manned space ship in jules verne's 1865 science fiction novel, from the earth to the moon.
