In the middle of every town, there was the Ziggurat.  The Ziggurat stood a temple.  The classical Sumerians considered their demons subsisted in the sky.  For the gods to hear us sounder,  humans required to get more familiar to them.  Ziggurats were enormous, with built-in measures. Ziggurats had an extensive base that narrowed to a horizontal top. When the Babylonians carried over in the southland, and the Assyrians in the northland, ziggurats extended to be developed and applied in the same practice as they were in classical Sumer.
