How did barack obama address the economic recession that began in 2008 and led to massive unemployment?

Barack Obama was first inaugurated during the depths of the Great Recession.  The Great Recession caused millions of jobs and the unemployment was very high.

Obama, upon winning the presidency added 11.6 million private sector jobs.  This action helps the unemployment rate to decrease.
