Explain the role of colonialism in spreading christianity around the world

The religious imposition is an important aspect of cultural dominion and colonialism, by which the colonized people acquire the values and belief system of the colonizers.

European colonialism around the world started with the arrival of Spaniards and Portuguese conquerors to the Americas during the 16th-century. Together with their languages, cultures, and customs they also took their religion, Christianity, to the new settlements. There were a large number of Christian European missionaries that entered in contact with native American cultures in order to Christianize them. In this process of colonization, both in North America and South America, a large proportion of native people died as a result of killings, conflicts, and diseases, and eventually, the new settlements were occupied by European Christian believers.

Centuries later, when European powers expanded throughout Africa, Asia, and Oceania, they also took Christianity to the native people of these continents. Therefore, today large populations from Sub-Saharan Africa, India, Eastern Asia, Oceania, and the Americas are Christian, mainly due to the European active colonialism of previous centuries.
