He entered political life in 1735, as a member of the House of Commons. He defended the thesis that maritime power and colonial possessions would be more important to his country than European conquests, since colonies were the basis of the British trading system. He strongly criticized the Treaty of Paris (1763), despite guaranteeing Britain the position of dominant power.
