What brought conflict between mining companies and farmers?

Both of them look for land to both mine in and farm. 

For the farmers, they want land to grow their crops to make a living
This one doesn't damage the land as much as the other, however, profits may not be as high
For the miners, they want the land so they can mine for minerals
For this one, the profits are higher, however, they damage the soil quicker and working conditions can be much more quicker.
