McCulloch v. Maryland, was a milestone decision by the Supreme Court of the United States. The state of Maryland had tried to obstruct the operation of a branch of the Second Bank of the United States by imposing a tax on all notes of banks not chartered in Maryland. 

However in the end, the court decided that Congress did have the power to create the Bank and the state of Maryland cannot impose taxes or else they will violate the Constitution.
