Joseph McCarthy was an American Republican senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957. During his ten years in the Senate, McCarthy and his team were made famous for their research on people in the government of the United States and others suspected of being Soviet agents or sympathizers of communism infiltrated in the public administration or the army.

This "witch hunt" for ideological reasons was contrary to the Constitution of the United States.
