Because it revived the emotional side of religion and was a reaction against rationalism and the enlightenment. It created divisions within the church leading to more diversity, weakened church authority,and played a significant role in social reform.

Newly reinvigorated Christians created activist groups such as the abolitionists, women's suffrage, temperance, and educational reform.
