Before the Civil War, slaves were commonly used in the South. The North was primarily made-up of abolitionists (people against the idea of slavery). 
The South viewed slaves as a form of cheap labor, and southerners believed that slaves should be bought, owned, and sold. Slaves were not seen as people, but rather as property. 
After the civil war, slavery was brought to an end. However, segregation continued to be a problem throughout America for many years following.
