The First Continental Congress is the name given to the meeting of delegates from the North American colonies, which met in Philadelphia in September and October 1774 (55 representatives from 12 out of 13 colonies) to discuss their response to the Intolerable Acts, which were voted by the British Parliament a few months earlier, in March. These laws were specifically designed to punish the Massachusetts colony for defying British politics, especially at the Boston Tea Party.  The First Continental Congress wanted to assert the rights of the colonies against the British government.
