Why do some scientists believe that dinosaurs were warm blooded?

A new study argues that dinosaurs were not "cold-blooded," like modern reptiles, or "warm-blooded," like mammals. Instead, they possessed a blood that was a kind of intermediate, still observed in few animals today.

Modern reptiles such as lizards, snakes and turtles are ectothermic, meaning that their body temperature depends on their environment. Mammals and birds, on the other hand, regulate their own body temperature by trying to keep it constant. In the case of humans, for example, it is 37º C.

For a long time it was thought that dinosaurs, being classified reptiles, were ectothermic and with slow metabolisms. However, a team of researchers led by John Grady of the University of New Mexico (USA), used a new technique of metabolic analysis to determine that extinct animals did not resemble mammals or modern reptiles, they occupied an intermediate position called mesothermia.

The metabolism of dinosaurs can be inferred by observing the rate of bone growth. The bones of the fossils are deposited in layers, which reveal how fast these species grew. Another indication of their metabolism is the size that these animals reached since they were born until they reached adulthood. Mammals grow about 10 times faster than reptiles and their metabolism is 10 times faster.
