The Warsaw uprising was a planned military revolt by the home army in Warsaw Poland in August 1944. The home army took over many districts in Poland at first but were soon pushed back by the German army. As fighting continued, the uprising ended in October 1944. German troops took control of more parts of Poland. 180,000 people died and another 11,000 members of the home army were taken as prisoners of war. The importance of this event is that it shows that the people of Poland were brave and wanted to be liberated from the Nazis. Poland created its own army to fight back and did a pretty good job fighting the Germans. The Warsaw uprising showed that civilians were willing to fight for the Jews and for Poland.
