Although it was also a movement of social, political, scientific and economic evolution, the Northern Renaissance presented significant differences in relation to the Italian Renaissance.

The Northern Renaissance did not emphasize humanism, as the Italian Renaissance did. Furthermore, artistic production was more focused on empirical observation of reality, while Italian Realism focused on realistic representation of reality, keeping the proportion, perspective and human anatomy faithful to the real world.
