California's largest wildfire has merged with smaller ones and destroyed homes in remote areas where firefighters have limited access, as many others spread across the western United States and threatened property. The massive Dixie fire, which began On July 14, had leveled more than a dozen homes and other structures when it combined with flying flames after dark Saturday to destroy the small community of Indian Falls, Northern California.
There were no updated damage estimates on Sunday, but fire officials said the blaze had scorched nearly 298 square miles (772 square kilometers) of wood and brush in Plumas and Butte counties. Containing up to 21%.
