Nature in American settlements played, arguably, the biggest role. When they came to settle, they needed to hunt. They didn't have grocery stores or farmers markets, so settlers relied on nature to provide them with their necessities. Nature became a prominent theme in literary works during this time. It allowed the settlers to survive in a way they hadn't before, but it also brought new dangers that they now had to face. Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.It underpins our economy, our society, indeed our very existence.
