The Massacre itself began when a young colonist insulted a British officer, in which the officer replied by hitting him in the head with the butt of his musket. A crowd grew, most throwing snowballs with rocks inside them at the British. Once the crowd had grown to several hundred, one soldier was struck by a thrown stick, and fired into the crowd, resulting the rest of the British line firing as well. Three were killed instantly, eight were wounded, with two dying later of their injuries. One fatality, Crispus Attucks, is portrayed in the common painting of the Massacre (attached). His blood is regarded as the first spilled for the cause of liberty in the American colonies.
