The Babylonian empire had already established city-states in the Middle East, but the Hittites arrived with the intention of capturing land and establishing colonies. Because they could manufacture iron for weapons, the Hittites possessed a strong military. They were attacked by Mediterranean invaders known as sea people, as well as nomad tribes from the east, when famine struck them around 1200 B.C. The Babylonians were governed by invaders from 1595 B.C. to 625 B.C. until Nabopolassar, a general, drove them out and became king. Soon later, their massive new kingdom developed.
