B. Franklin: I know that whenever the subject of taxes has occurred in conversation where I have been present, it has appeared to be the opinion of everyone that we could not be taxed in a Parliament where
we were not represented. But the payment of tariffs laid by the act of Parliament, as regulations of
commerce (trade), was never disputed (argued against). The Stamp Act says we shall not sell property, we
shall neither marry, unless we pay the tax, and thus it is intended to force us to pay or suffer the
consequences of refusing it
