Slavery had been practiced in Africa for centuries, particularly in the Middle East. This already existing slave trade was extended by Europeans.

Slavery spread across Africa as a result of tribal and other wars. Soldiers from the losing side were taken prisoner and sold into slavery after these battles.

Europeans were in desperate need of cheap labor in the United States to work their land.
