How was the colonization of Australia and New Zealand distinct from the rest of New Imperialism

Australia and New Zealand were both colonized by the United Kingdom. Australia started out as a British penal colony, but further settlement was encouraged with the granting of land (384). New Zealand had a much more dispersed colonization, initially started with whaling settlements.
