In 1783, the United States of America signed the Treaty of Paris, ending the American Revolutionary War and officially gaining independence from Great Britain. The loss of the American colonies weakened British claims in North America and brought a new competitor for control of the continent. The United States wasted no time in pressing claims in the Great Lakes and along the Canadian border. By 1792, the new country was already competing with its former colonial overlord for territories in the Pacific Northwest, a competition that would only increase in the decades to follow. How did the end of the American Revolution change who controlled the Pacific Northwest? It enabled Britain to secure its hold on the Northwest. It impaired Britain’s claim on its territory in the Northwest. It resulted in the Northwest immediately becoming part of the United States. It led to the United States losing land it had once claimed in the Northwest.
