This excerpt comes from a short story about a young man
who leaves home for the first time to go to school in Paris.
He rents a room in a boarding house run by a very strict
landlady who imposes many rules on her renters.
from “My Landlady"
by Guy De Maupassant
Though Mme. Kergaran runs a boarding house, she
treats the adults who live there like children.
Though the narrator does not want to study law in
Paris, he decides to enjoy his time there,
Though other boarders are afraid of the landlady,
the narrator stands up to her and earns her
respect
When my father had made up his mind that I
should go to Paris to continue my law studies,
there had been a long discussion about
settling everything
Some of our neighbors told us of a certain
Mme. Kergaran, a native of Brittany, who took
in boarders, and so my father arranged
matters by letter with this respectable person,
at whose house I and my luggage arrived one
evening
Though the narrator initially dislikes Mme.
Kergaran, he ends up seeing how kind she is and
cares for her.
