My reason is that although I may be under their control Russia at the time was a very confident and strong country. This also meant rulers of Russia would be very proud. If I am very proud then why would I ever give tribute to people who have conquered my land and taken over my people. While this may not have been the smartest of ideas this was the way Russia was at the time and did not bow to anyone.

The Mongol horse was a lot more smaller and agile, and they used bows and arrows, to pick off enemies at a distance. Typically the more distance you have between your enemy, in a combat scenario, the higher the odds of you surviving. They would swoop down from the steppes, and circle and confuse their enemies, and butcher them later on.
