After the U. S. Entry into the war in 1917, the federal government drafted (conscripted) all single young men into service. North Carolina provided 86,000 soldiers. A little more than 2,000 died of wounds and disease. In this war, for the first time, North Carolinians fought in units with soldiers from other states. One army division, called "Old Hickory" after President Andrew Jackson, was made up primarily of North Carolinians. It helped break the German defensive line at a crucial point in the war.
