Which geographic feature was used to establish the proclamation line of 1763?

The Appalachian Mountains served as the line beyond which settlement was forbidden. West of the line was to be considered an Indian reserve. The proclamation proved largely ineffective and only angered settlers and political investors in the land.  I hope that you get an A.:)
