Byzantine Christianity was divided from the Christian faith of Western Europe primarily because of religious and theological differences and disputes among its leaders. 

In the Byzantine Empire, the church was very much a part of state affairs and was treated as a department of the state. The Byzantine Emperor assigned "patriarchs of Constantinople" who were the highest ecclesiastical officials in the Byzantine Church. These Byzantine Patriarchs were often in conflict with the Roman popes for rights and powers.

Eventually, the differences and the strained relationships led to the division of the Catholic Church into the Eastern Orthodox Church (in the East) and the Roman Catholic Church (in the West).
