From the onset, the Constitution has been a conflictual document: the Founders fought over which provisions would be included in it and how they would be presented. Today, the interpretation of the Constitution remains the battleground of heated debates on the legality of abortion, same-sex marriage, or the treatment of prisoners. In spite of the importance Americans place on this document, we know relatively little about how it was written and what is included in it.
