Birth of a Nation was one of the first major Hollywood movies. It employed impressive special effects and production quality for the time, and featured some intense action sequences. It also glorified the KKK and made their horrible acts out to sound like acts of justice. It was one of the most racist movies ever made for mass consumption in the United States, and many people watched it.

It depicted African Americans as villains who sought to capture white women and generally cause havoc. The KKK are depicted as heroes who come to save the day. For this reason, the movie was incredibly controversial. Many people correctly saw the movie as a horrible distortion of reality and wanted the movie boycotted. Unfortunately, many Americans at the time agreed with the message of the film, and for this reason there was great disagreement over the film, and great controversy.
