Many people who supported anti-immigrant movements came from families who had immigrated to america only one or two generations earlier. why then do you think they looked down on recent immigrants? which of the two cartoons you’ve viewed do you think makes its argument more successfully?

A generation makes a large difference. These people may not have known that their parents were immigrants (since they were born here), and that they may have lived in overcrowded conditions, they do not like competition, etc. This results in them hating immigrants who have taken over things that the 'natives' believe that belong to them'.
