How did socrates affect present day democracies?

Though Socrates may not have knowingly influenced democracy during his lifetime, his famous trial and execution demonstrated the defects of democracy. His sentence to death by the jury pushed the idea that though it may sound fair for a State to be ruled by the masses, what if the masses are ignorant or prejudiced?
