  Also known as Method of Elenchus or Socratic Debate is a form of argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to estimulate critical thinking and draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions. It´s a method in which the defense of one point of view is questioned and may lead to a contradictory answer by the weakening of that point.

  The method´s name come after the classical greek philosopher Socrates and it´s introduced by him in Plato´s dialogue Theaetetus, on it it´s employed to bring out definitions implicit in the interlocutor´s beliefs.

  The Socratic method is a method of hypothese elimination, better hypotheses are found by the identification and elimination of those that lead to a contradicition. The basic form is a series of questions formulated as tests of logic and fact intended to help a person discovers her/his beliefs  about some topic.

  Socrates generally aplied his method to concepts that seemed to lack any concrete meaning, for example the virtue, justice, courage. The examinations challenged the implicit moral beliefs of the interlocutors and bring out inconsistencies in their beliefs. Then in the view of these inconsistencies and inadequacies Socrates himself professed his ignorance by saying "I know that I know nothing". He said this to let the others know that he was awareness of his ignorance and this way he was wiser that those who claimed knowledge because he could discover his own errors while the others assume they were correct.
