The South had the easier strategic task in the war. They did not need to invade and defeat the North. Instead, they just had to hold out long enough for the North to get tired of the war and give up. The Southerners were also counting on help from Europe. They had the advantage of fighting a defensive war. This meant the Northern supply lines would have to stretch very far because the Union soldiers would have to travel into the South.
