Both the Monroe doctrine and the Adams-Onis Treaty limited the powers of the European colonial powers on the American continent.

The Adams-Onis Treaty, signed in 1821 between the United States and Spain, gave America possession of Florida, as well as limited Spanish territorial aspirations in Louisiana.
