Unlike the dutch how were the british able to secure their trade bases

Unlike Dutch who seized control of a number of small spice-producing islands with bloodshed and forcing their people to sell only to the Dutch, British established and secured their trading three bases  in Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras with the permission of Mughal authorities or local rulers.
