The northerners that supported the abolition of slavery demanded the end of slavery in the southern states. On the other hand, the southern states supported slavery because their economy depended so much on slaves and they never accepted the claims of the north. Southerners needed slaves in the large plantations to grow crops that had to be exported to Europe, and that represented big business. The Civil War was the next logical step in this series of events.
