Me read the excerpt from an fbi memorandum. memorandum for mr. burns, the department of justice bureau of investigation washington, d. c. — september 25, 1922 mr. paul wooton, washington correspondent for the new orleans times-picayune, presented a letter addressed to the attorney general, by governor john m. parker of louisiana, asking for assistance in investigation of ku-klux matters in northern louisiana. the governor has been unable to use either the mails, telegraph, or telephone because of interference by the klan. he has received a large number of anonymous and other communications, and much of mail, particularly from monroe, has been opened. the postmaster at monroe is understood to be a member as are a number of prominent officials and business men. according to the memo, why does governor parker require the assistance of the fbi? government officials and businessmen who belonged to the kkk kept trying to recruit him into their organization. the people of monroe were unable to get their mail or communicate with others outside of the town because of interference by klan members. the government of louisiana had come under control of the kkk, and parker was unable to control the chaos. members of the kkk, including government officials and high-powered businessmen, prevented him from doing his job.
