Why did the partition of africa create artificial boundaries?

The main reason why the partition of Africa create artificial boundaries is because the colonial European powers practically randomly drew lines on a map in order to divide up territory--not taking into consideration the tribal boundaries and local affiliations of the native populations, which were incredibly diverse.
