The husband of Catherine the great was Peter III, the grandson of Peter the Great and heir to the throne. The marriage was not a happy one and Peter decided to be rid of his wife. Catherine however had the support of the arm and the public . On 9th July 1762, she was declared empress, Her husband abdicated and was killed eight days later through assassination. Catherine was then crowned in Moscow and began a 34 - year reign.
