Well the story goes a little something like this. in the year of our lord where we are presented in history with the donner - reed party was a group of american pioneers who set out for california in a wagon train in may 1846. they were delayed a series of mishaps and mistakes and spent the winter of 1846-1847 snowbound in the sierra nevada. now them taking the unproven shortcut route and encountering early storms in the sierra nevada were the main causes of the disaster. many authors have placed the blame for the tragedy upon lansford warren hastings , an ohio lawyer who promoted the ill advised shortcut now known as the hastings cutoff. some later pioneers learn to use better and wiser knowledge of the terrain they are traveling upon , and use maps , navigation. a compass for example. they also didn’t head out when snow season was about contract blizzards and avalanches , later pioneers were smart when it came to traveling in the mountains. you and i hope i answered your question. good !
